Description: A favorite of the Luckman stage, Raiford Rogers Modern Dance returns for it’s eleventh season at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex. Using a movement strongly rooted in classical ballet but still moving boldly forward into new territory, Raiford Rogers’ choreography has been described by the LA Times as “bracingly contemporary and superbly aware of how much ballet can express without descending to desperate crossover strategies or hard sell hyper-athleticism.” The Los Angeles based company will present the Last Songs of Beethoven and the Birth of the Avant-garde including the ballet premiere of Heiliger Dankgesang. The Dankgesang (Song of Thanks) is considered to be one of the most rapturous creations in 19th-century music and was written by Beethoven after recovering from a serious illness that he had feared was fatal. It is said that with these complex works Beethoven invented the avant-garde.
