Description
This will be a NO HOST EVENT. Come and go as you please. http://www.axisoflogic.com/artman/uploads/joanbaez-campcasey.jpg Joan Baez in Concert. Need I say more? This will undoubtedly be a jammed up event and I recommend you arrive at 6:30pm if you want to get decent seating up front. However, sometimes, there will be a massive amount of jerks who will stand in front of you so bringing chairs may be useless. But we might be okay as this is not a dance concert... you take your chances. The concerts run from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. in the pier parking lot (on the pier). All concerts are free. No alcohol is allowed. Dogs are allowed as long as they are on a leash. You are more than welcomed to bring your own seating but seats will be available for rental. Do not bring any glass containers. http://www.coastal.ca.gov/publiced/photos/2006/hm-Tamanaha-SMonicaPier.jpg In 1964, Joan Baez publically endorsed resisting taxes by withholding 60% - the amount that funded the military during the Vietnam war. She founded the Institute for the Study of Nonviolence in 1965 and encouraged draft resistance at her concerts. She was arrested twice in 1967 for blocking the entrance of the Armed Forces Induction Center in Oakland, California where she spent over a month in jail. She was a frequent participant in anti-war marches and rallies, including numerous protests in New York organized by the Vietnam Peace Parade Committee, starting with the March 1966 Fifth Avenue Peace Parade, a free 1967 concert at the Washington Monument where tens of thousands participated. In December, 1972, she went behind enemy lines in North Vietnam to protest the war. While she was there, she was sheltered by the North Vietmamese in underground bunkers during the U.S. military's "Christmas bombing" of Hanoi which continued for eleven straight days. It was there that she saw a Vietnamese woman crying over her son, killed by the U.S. military and recorded her song, "Where are you now, my son" with the sounds of the bombing recorded in the background. Joan Baez has come "full circle" and in August, 2005, she joined Cindy Sheehan at Camp Casey in a protest against the current "war on terrorism". At 68, Joan Baez continues to stand against the U.S. wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and around the world. - Les Blough, Editor
