Description
Just how did Columbus manage to float the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria across that big ocean?  Find out by participating in this field trip - which includes a session in the Science Center's "Big Lab," as well as an IMAX film.
Students will experience a 75-minute lesson on Boats and Balance from 11:30 am to 1:15 pm.  By building their own model sail boats, students investigate design and energy needed to move across the 40’ x 20’ Water Works pool inside the Big Lab.  After becoming familiar with the boat names, students are given a variety of sizes for each part of the boats.  They are encouraged to experiment with changing parts to see how they affect the performance of their boat and discover the importance of balance in sailing.  This session is geared for grades 3+ and can accomodate only 35 students.
At 2:00 pm, we will check in to the IMAX theatre for a showing of Wild Ocean 3D, a symphonic giant screen film about man and nature that captures one of the world’s greatest spectacles.   Each year a massive feeding frenzy takes place in the oceans of South Africa as billions of fish migrate up the KwaZulu-Natal Wild Coast.   Breaching whales, frenzied sharks, herding dolphins, and diving gannets compete in an epic underwater struggle for survival.
Please feel free to arrive before 11:00 am to enjoy a self-guided tour of the CA Science Center’s permanent exhibits; there is no charge for admission.  OR, you are welcome to enjoy the hands-on, interactive exhibits with your younger children while the students experience the Boats and Balance session!  Then, everyone can meet back up to experience the IMAX movie together.

Directions:  From the 10 West, take the 101 North approximately 1 mile.  Merge onto the 110 South (toward Harbor Freeway/San Pedro) and continue on the 110 South for approximately 4 miles.  Exit Exposition Boulevard, make a soft left at bottom of the ramp onto Flower Street.  Turn left onto Figueroa Street.  ½ block down on the right, enter Exposition Park and follow the guest signs to the parking area.  Parking is $6 per vehicle.
