Description: Rich in vibrant colors and infused with stories both ancient and new, Mithila paintings from the Bihar region of India debuts at CAFAM this spring. Rooted in traditional wall and floor paintings, modern Mithila painting is created on paper and illustrates both religious gods and goddesses, and modern themes such as gender politics and social commentary. Mithila paintings have raised the status of its women artists and the economy of this poor region as the artform continues to gain international acclaim. This exhibit traces the extraordinary development of this vibrant painting tradition that straddles both the modern and the ancient.
