What strategies can individuals within organisations use to make their organisation more successful and sustainable?

Ed Gillespie is the co-founder and creative director of Futerra Sustainability Communications. Futerra arose from the frustration of its co-founders, in the late 1990’s, with the unsophisticated communications around sustainable development, and the dull and worthy messaging of corporate social responsibility. Supported by a grant from the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts, they started a major research programme to develop guidelines for sustainability communications, now known as their popular 10 Rules. Ed Gillespie guards against green-wash while putting some fun and passion into sometimes complex messages. His interesting career history includes working for the Natural History Film Unit, as a marine biologist in Australia, New Caledonia and Orkney and on environmental issues for Transport for London. Ed has Masters degrees in both Marine Conservation and Sustainable Development, is a Trustee of Anti-Apathy and writes regularly for The Guardian

Jo Confino is Executive Editor and Head of Sustainable Development at The Guardian. Jo started questioning how a newspaper that champions women’s rights could make money from advertisements for sex phone lines in one of its supplements, and went on to help the famous British paper and website revamp its whole operations to reflect its values of social and environmental justice. As well as producing an award-winning annual sustainability audit for the Guardian News Media Limited, the first one in the sector to be independently verified, he recently launched one of the world’s first interactive sustainability reporting websites www.guardian.co.uk/sustainability|

Ed Gillespie and Jo Confino’s experiences are featured in Climb The Green Ladder: Make Your Company and Career More Sustainable by Amy Fetzer and Shari Aaron (Wiley). To celebrate the launch of Climb The Green Ladder on 13 November, Ed and Jo will discuss the strategies that individuals within organisations can use to make their organisation more successful and sustainable. They will also highlight how taking the lead and helping your organisation can future-proof your career by marking you out as a dynamic, creative achiever.
