Description
In India there are 63 million hectares of forest. Approximately 1 billion people depend directly or indirectly upon the forest, and 600 million dwell within forested areas. Typically, inhabitants of these biodiversity- rich areas live below poverty level. Balancing biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation can pose numerous challenges. Dr. Setty will talk about several potential strategies that address these issues, such as enterprise-based conservation; increasing communities' stakes in biodiversity; enhancing crop diversity of farms; increasing crop yield and exploring the use of invasive forest weeds to earn cash.
