Attention Freestate Members ÃÂ- A group of club members are planning on traveling to Gettysburg and walk and stay the weekend. Everyone will make their own hotel reservations and reservations for dinner. We can meet up and enjoy the weekend. Check the ** where the information for making your reservations. You are welcome to drive up on Saturday and attend either of the walks. You do not have to stay the night. See### about walks on Saturday. November 13, 14 and 15, 2009 Three Walks + One Swim Friday, Saturday and Sunday Sponsored by the York White Rose Wanderers **Hotel Reservations can be made at the 1863 Inn of Gettysburg at the rate of $69 for a single/double, $79 for a triple, and $89 for a quad plus tax. Directions to the 863 Inn of Gettysburg (formerly Holiday Inn) From the square in Gettysburg go South on Baltimore St. (Bus. 15 S). Veer left at the third light. The 1863 Inn is immediately on the left. Directions to the YWCA of Gettysburg & Adams County: From the square in Gettysburg go South on Baltimore St. (Bus.15 S, PA 116 W) 1 block to Middle St. Turn right on Middle St. (PA 116 W) and go 7/10 mile, passing traffic signals at Washington St., West St., and Confederate Ave./Seminary Ridge. The YWCA driveway is 1/10 mile past Confederate Ave. on the right. Directions to the Adams County Winery: From the square in Gettysburg, go west on Chambersburg St (US 30). In 8 miles, turn left at the blinking light, towards Cashtown. There are well-marked signs for the Winery at this intersection and every turn you will make from here. Proceed towards Cashtown for one mile. After one mile, the road dead-ends. Turn left. In 100 yards, turn right, following the sign to Ortanna. In about one mile, you will come to another dead-end and stop sign. Turn right. At the fork in the road, keep to the left. In less than a mile, at the bottom of the hill, turn right on Peach Tree Road. In 1/3 mile, turn left onto the dirt road and proceed ü mile to the Winery. PARKING: There are large parking lots with free parking at all start locations. **Join us for dinner Saturday night at General Pickett's Buffet. Walk # 1: AVA Event # AT09 / 81997 --5K & 10K Trails, Rated 1+ Friday November 13, Start between 2:00-5:00PM; finish by 9:00PM ÃÂ- ###Saturday November 14, Start between 2:00-4:00PM; finish by 7:00PM Start Location: 1863 Inn Gettysburg Battlefield, 516 Baltimore St, Gettysburg, PA This walk features some of the haunted places described by Joe Svehla in his Ghostly Images book series. These include places nearby, the National Cemetery, the Lutheran Seminary, Gettysburg College, and haunted sites near the center of town. Please bring a flashlight if you will be walking after sunset. You will pass a number of restaurants if you wish to eat supper during the walk. There is also a restaurant at the 1863 Inn. Special Programs: Artistic Heritage, Authors, Historic Churches, Museums, Railroad, Cemeteries, Veteran Memorials and Courthouses. 300m Swim: AVA Event # AT09 / 81999 Saturday Only ÃÂ- November 14, Start between 2:15-3:45PM; finish by 4:30PM Start Location: YWCA of Gettysburg & Adams County, 909 Fairfield Road, Gettysburg, PA In addition to the $3.00 IVV credit fee, there will be a $5.00 fee for the use of the swimming pool. The YWCA does not provide towels or locks for its lockers. Walk # 2: AVA Event # AT09 / 81998 - 5K, 6K and 11K Trails, Rated 2+ ###Saturday Only ÃÂ- November 14, Start between 9:00AM-12:00 Noon; finish by 3:00PM- Start Location: Adams County Winery, 251 Peach Tree Road, Ortanna, PA Visit the wineryÃÂ's web site at http://www.adamscountywinery.com/ This walk has a 5K loop in the fruit orchards and vineyards above the winery and a 6K loop on country roads. Food and beverage will be available for purchase at the winery. You will be able to purchase wine by the bottle or glass. Non-alcoholic beverages will be available. The trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. Special Programs: None. Walk # 3: AVA Event # AT09 / 82000 5K & 10K Trails, Rated 1+ Sunday Only ÃÂ- November 15, Start between 8:00-11:00AM; finish by 2:00PM Start location: 1863 Inn of Gettysburg Battlefield, 516 Baltimore St, Gettysburg, PA There are two 5K loops. The 5K Monuments and Museums (M&M) Walk will go through the Gettysburg National Cemetery, to the new Gettysburg Museum and Visitors Center, and through the portion of the battlefield where Union defenders stopped the Confederate attack (Pickett's Charge) on the afternoon of the July 3, 1863. The route passes six museums and numerous monuments to the generals and units who fought here. The 5K Churches Walk features eight historic churches, all with a Civil War connection. The routes are on paved paths and sidewalks. They are suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. Special Programs: Authors, Museums, Railroad, Cemeteries, Veteran Memorials, Artistic Heritage, Historic Churches, Fire Houses and Courthouses. SPONSOR: York White Rose Wanderers, AVA-236, in cooperation with the Borough of Gettysburg, the YWCA of Gettysburg & Adams County, and the Adams County Winery. SANCTIONED BY: This event is sanctioned by the American Volkssport Association (AVA), a member of the International Federation of Popular Sports. These events count towards the acquisition of IVV Achievement awards. PROCEDURE: AVA policy requires that every participant, fee or non-fee, sign the insurance waiver and obtain a numbered start card which is stamped at control points along the course. At the Finish, the validated card is turned in and IVV books are stamped for official credit, if the credit fee has been paid. The trail may be walked a second time on the same day using the same start card at no additional cost. ELIGIBILITY: Everyone is welcome to participate. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Walk at your own pace. Joggers welcome! REGISTRATION and FEES: This event is FREE to those who wish to participate without IVV credit. IVV credit is $3.00. There is no pre-registration. CONDITIONS: The event will be held regardless of the weather. There will be no littering. Wildlife and plant life are not to be disturbed. No refunds. Pets are allowed on all three walks; however, they are not allowed inside buildings at the start points and check points. On Walks #1 and #3, participants with pets will have to detour around the Gettysburg National Cemetery, which does not allow pets. AWARD: There is no A award for this event; however, a hat pin will be available for purchase by anyone who completes three of the eight Gettysburg events (including the four Year-Round Events) between Thurs, Nov 12, and Sun, Nov 15. REFRESHMENTS and ENTERTAINMENT: Water and hard candy will be available at the start/finish and checkpoints. For Walks #1 and #3, food and beverage will be available for purchase at the 1863 Inn or at establishments along the trail.
