Description
When you're used to walking in the arid terrain of So Cal, you can be forgiven for getting excited about pine trees. This State Park is high enough to be green in August and to offer densely shaded trails. It feels like you're in the Sierra Nevadas. And it's only a little over an hour's drive from San Diego County. There was a fire here a few years ago, but it's beauty isstill awesome. The brown leaves give it a fall flavor even in high summer. The forest floor is lush with greenery as the forest rebounds. And the dark tree skeletons add to the interest of the dramatic views. We'll be offering a 10K “grand tour” route here that starts at Doane Pond, goes to Boucher Lookout and loops back through pines and meadows. About 800' elevation gain in the first 4K and then its downhill or level. The 5K route goes to the lookout and is about 500' gain. Even if you don't like hills, this 5K is well worth your time. The trail to the lookout has dramatic views along the way and view from the top is spectacular. The walk is open year round but if there's snow the trail will be buried. Check with the rangers if in doubt at 760-742-3462.
