Walking Event: Lake Hodges

The 5K and the easy 10K are out-and-back walks along the soft dirt trails that skirt Lake Hodges. The lake is very scenic and a great place to get away from it all. The lake-only routes are rated 2. In spring the surrounding hills and lakeside are green. In summer the area is a golden brown. The 4-rated 10K goes along the lake for a while but then heads uphill to bag Bernardo Mountain. Elevation gain is about 1000 . The climb is steady and only rarely steep. The 360 degree views from the top are awe-inspiring. The Witch Creek Fire of '07 burned this area, leading to a somewhat eerie landscape and wide-open views. Restrooms at the parking lot. Carry water on the trail. Dogs allowed on leash. Not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. Hiking Boots recommended for the 4-rated 10K. This is an exposed walk that can get very hot in the summer so check forecast. Rattlesnakes possible on hot days.
