Walking Event: Calavera Hills Preserve

The Calavera Hills Preserve is a swath of wilderness in an otherwise residential area on the border of Carlsbad & Oceanside. It s a popular urban escape for local walkers, joggers & mountain bikers. The 5K route is rated 2. It's a loop around Lake Calavera. Most of the walk is on soft dirt trails, mostly flat and very scenic. It s a great morning walk if you live in the area. The 10K route explores more of the preserve and includes some hills. It's rated 3 for rolling hills. There is an optional extra 1K up to the top of Mt Calavera. The flat prairie-like expanse at the base of the mountain is particularly peaceful. Note that the trails are unmarked and route finding requires strict attention to the directions. This walk is probably more of interest to locals than tourists.
