Sharon Weiner - "New Paintings"

Sharon Weiner's abstract paintings emerge from a process of self-reflection and rigorous manipulation of paint. In her current series, Weiner trains acrylic paint into organic masses that take on a corporeal presence but never lose their painterly character. These prominent forms, which seem to cast light from within, are at once celestial, earth bound and oceanic. They float in deep spaces that are equally open-ended and set the viewer's imagination in motion.

Weiner creates her works by intuitively applying numerous layers of alternately brushed, poured and airbrushed acrylic paint with sanding in between. The artist's arduous process provides her access into the psychological spaces on which her paintings are based. The striking images are Weiner's own language for translating the inner reality she harnesses and the external observations in the natural world that inspire her . “My painting,” Weiner states, “comes out of intense personal experiences, including conscious and unconscious dynamics. None of this is 'coded' into the work, nor do the paintings simply embody my emotions. Rather, they visualize the process of self-revelation in a kind of internal dialogue...I give visual form to what experiencing my life feels like - indeed, to what awareness itself, an abstract concept, feels like.”
