      Maui Classical Music Festival

A string quartet known for glistening and vivacious playing and a trio that is more than a trio will bring their music to Maui in May 2019. The Formosa Quartet is returning to the Maui Classical Music Festival for the first time since 2007. The Koinonia Trio was formed in September 2015 and already has earned several prizes. Hye-Jin Cho plays piano, Christine Harada Li plays violin and Nathaniel Pierce plays cello -- and also performs as a tenor. The concert series also features violist Yizhak Schotten and pianist Katherine Collier, the Festival's music directors since its inception in 1982. Concerts are May 10 at Makawao Union Church, May 13 and 17 at Keawalai Congregational Church in Makena and May 15 at Wananalua Congregational Church in Hana. The Formosa Quartet won the First Prize and the Amadeus Prize at the 10th London International String Quartet Competition in 2006. Since then, it has piled up accolades such as "marvelously elegant" and "spellbinding virtuosity" (BBC Music Magazine), "bold and intense, like shots of pure espresso" (MUSO Magazine), and "a glistening, vivacious, witty, encore-like performance" (Classic FM). Violinist Jasmine Lin was won prizes in the International Paganini Competition and the International Naumburg Competition. "Virtuosic abandon" was the New York Times description of her playing.
