Description
Begin your walk with a trip down the hill" and through a section of downtown Kearney. If you wish, stop at MONA, the Museum of Nebraska Art (no charge). Walk through downtown Kearney to the Union Pacific tracks, the most heavily traveled railroad corridor in the world. Going west from downtown takes you by the site of the Carnegie Library and to the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus. Here you will find the statue of Donovan Welch, nationally recognized Nebraska poet. Stroll through beautiful Harmon Park by the "lighthouse" and surrounding Rock Garden built by WPA workers in the 1930s. Complete your journey by viewing the Korean War Memorial in Apollo Park before ascending the hill" back to the starting point. Starting point open dawn to dusk. This year there will be an alternate trail (same stamp) which will take walkers along the scenic walking trail to Cottonmill Lake State Recreation Area. A drive of approximately two miles will be required to get to the starting point, but the extra effort will be well worth it, if you are interested in a "nature" walk. Why not do the regular version first half of 2010, and the Cottonmill Lake trail the second half of 2010? You will not be disappointed with this alternate route.
