Description
Autism Symposium - World Congress on Disabilities (Florida Fall 2008) presented by The UF-Jacksonville Center for Autism and Related Disabilities Prime F. Osborn Center Jacksonville, FL November 21-22 2008 This track will address topics pertaining to the education and treatment of students with autism spectrum disorders. Topics will be of interest to family members, educational professionals and others who serve this population. Presentations will be given by the experienced staff from the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities with the University of Florida in Jacksonville. Friday 9:00AM – 9:50AM Using Natural Environment Training to Teach Language Skills to Students with Autism Presenter: Mae Barker, PhD, BCBA Natural Environment Training (NET) occurs in the student’s typical settings, uses materials inherent to these settings, capitalizes on the child’s motivation to communicate, and uses reinforcement specific to the nature of the interaction. At the core of NET is the “discrete trial,” an ordered teaching sequence starting with an instructional opportunity, followed by student responding, and then teacher prompting and delivery of reinforcement contingent on the student’s response. This talk will cover the steps involved in planning and implementing NET for teaching verbal behavior (i.e., language) to students with autism and provide video examples. Data sheets for monitoring student acquisition of skills and online resources will also be provided.
