Saturday 1:00PM – 1:50PM The Applied Behavior Analysis Approach to Addressing Challenging Behaviors – Part 1 Presenter: Carolyn Tully, M.S., BCBA and Marlena Fuller, B.A., BCABA Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the scientific approach to understanding human behavior. Problem behavior can be defined as behaviors that are disruptive, stand in the way of learning, and put the individual and surrounding others at risk of injury. ABA closely looks at what triggers problem behavior and the consequences that follow. This presentation will cover Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), a systematic method of determining the functions of behavior. Once the function of the problem behavior has been determined it is necessary to write a Behavior Support Plan, specific to the individual with protocols listed describing how to intervene when problem behavior occurs. This talk will also cover the importance of data collection, ways in which to collect data, and teaching students appropriate behaviors to replace challenging behaviors. Sample data sheets will be provided to participants as well as a list of additional online resources.
