The 2012 Professional Development, Embalming and Restorative Art Conference will provide the attendee with the most in-depth concepts on embalming and restorative art for the best value. The motivational and instructive practicum will be presented by knowledgeable, professional and trustworthy presenters. The 2012 conference pledges to be the premier embalming and restorative art conference in California.

The speakers are prepared to reinvigorate, rejuvenate, and revive the expertise and proficiency of the professional embalmer. The registration options include a one day or a full two day registration. These options will increase the probability of resulting one that fits the schedule for you and your personnel with 12 CE's. All sessions will be held at the Irvine Marriott's Tuscany Ballroom.

Vernie Fountain, CFSP is the 2012 Key Note Speaker

Embalmer & Post Mortem Reconstructive Surgery Specialist, Funeral Director, Private Investigator - Fountain National Academy of Professional Embalming Skills, Springfield, MO

By any means Necessary - Reconstruct Part I & II

The presentation will be divided into two separate sessions for the embalmer to improve his or her professional technical skills. It will discuss in-depth, specific techniques that can be performed by the embalmer to better manage the most severe soft tissue injuries and disfiguring, restorative art cases. All techniques are designed to enable the embalmer to adequately preserve the body and transform it from an unacceptable appearance toward a more acceptable and identifiable appearance. Vernie will walk you through what is necessary to create a good memory for a family in need.

(1 hour on Thursday, 1 hour on Friday - 1 CE each)

Crushing Head Injuries and Gunshot Wounds to the Head

In this presentation Vernie will discuss in-depth specialized techniques the embalmer can utilize on the most severe crushing type of head trauma cases. He will share case studies that will identify specific techniques that can be employed during the restoration of disfiguring caused by trauma. This presentation will identify a number of ideas and suggestions that will help funeral directors and embalmers better promote our services. It will identify methods that can improve staff capabilities when meeting with family members. The goal is to bridge science and service to achieve an open-casket viewing of difficult or traumatized cases. (2 CE hours)

Mass Fatality Disaster Preparedness: Managing the Small and Large Fatalities

It is not a matter if, but when disaster happens how well prepared will you be. For several years Vernie has served as Mass FatalityDisasterManagementin Missouri, Chief Death Investigator for the Boone County Medical Examiners' office, the Multi-DeathDisasterCoordinatorbytheFederalEmergencyManagementAgency, and theRegionalTeamCommanderforthe (DMORT)FederalDisasterMortuaryOperationalResponseTeam-Region7. These session is a must for funeral directors and embalmers as our roles are different but germane during a disaster. (2 CE hours)

Tissue Donation Overview and the Recovery of Vertebral Bodies Aaron Cohen, OneLegacy, Los Angeles, CA

The session is an overview of the human tissues that are recovered by OneLegacy and the reasons for the different recovery procedures that have been done historically and at the present time. The session will also cover the most recent recovery procedures of vertebral bodies and the reconstruction materials that embalmers will need or use to complete the recovery to ensure families can still have an open casket. (1 CE hour)

Uniform Anatomical Gift Act (UAGA) and Organ and Tissue Donation Referral Process

This session will provide an overview of the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act (UAGA) not only as it applies to the hierarchy of persons that may give authorization for donation on behalf of a decedent, but also as it applies to the medical examiner/coroner's offices in reviewing and releasing the organs and tissues that are consented. Marketing your Restorative Skills: Hair Replacement

The decedent's appearance becomes the focal point during the open casket viewing. Apply cosmetics, trimming the facial hair for men and restoring that recognizable hair style becomes key many families. During this workshop these embalmers will share concepts and insights on hair replacement, hair extensions, and facial hair treatments. There will be time for some hand-on instructions to better understand the basic and the detail replacements that are often required due to trauma or terminal diseases. (2 CE hours)

Transforming Funeral Service through Integrity and Empathy

Advancements in Postmortem Cosmetics and Restorative Art

Embalmers are often tasked with postmortem restoring of extremely difficult cases. With Dr. Brian's unique humor, during this workshop session he will discuss several embalming challenges, the chemical mixture, and sundry items that can be used to perform an expert job in a case where time may be limited. If you have considered using airbrushing, there will be some hand-on instructions for the novice. In these case studies you will see phenomenal air brushing techniques that promoted visitations and the West Side Memorial Services reputation. (1 CE hour)

All 12 CE credit units has been approved by the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice (APFSP) and most states. For an updated list of approved states email the Conference host. Registration is non-refundable.
