Photography Walking Tour, downtown Iowa City

Have you noticed a small cottage that was recently moved to 611 N Governor St and is currently undergoing foundation work? Historic preservationist MaryBeth Slonneger has spearheaded this project, saving what was once the home of early Iowa City photographer and portrait painter Isaac Wetherby.

Traveling west from his native Boston, Wetherby purchased his first camera two years after the announcement of photography's "invention." He ran a commercial photography studio in downtown Iowa City from 1854 until his retirement in 1874. His portraits included Abraham Lincoln, local and state citizens both ordinary and well known. His cottage will be on the Historic Homes Tour on Irving Weber Day, May 18.

In honor of Wetherby and the relocation of his cottage, Slonneger arranged for a walking tour of photography work in downtown Iowa City venues during the month of May. Historic photos will be featured at the State Historical Society, Hands Jewelers, and Wetherby House. Iowa Artisans Gallery will feature work by Conrad Marvin, whose sense of light in his large-format photography is so striking. Marvin's "Vault" is shown above. University Camera has sponsored the printing of an informative brochure listing all venues in this self-guided walking tour. Twenty-five local contemporary photographers will be featured in local businesses, including Catherine's, MC Ginsberg, US Bank, Senior Center, Prairie Table, Hills Bank & Trust, the Framers' Intent, University Camera, Java House at Prairie Lights, Michael Kreiser Photography at the Rock Island Train Depot, Iowa Artisans Gallery, MetaHome, Dulcinea, Discerning Eye, Textiles, the Englert Theatre, Daydreams Comics, Vortex, Motley Cow, Chait Galleries, House of Aromas, Fairgrounds, Herteen & Stocker, and Iowa Book.
