Walking Event: Chapman State Park

BE SURE TO BRING YOUR OWN WATER! NO pets in Park. The walk consists of two 5-km trails. The primary is within Chapman State Park. Distance includes walking from your parked car. The trail is mostly on natural paths through one of the remaining coastal woodlands intact on the Potomac River shore. Chapman's Landing reaches back to a land patent from Charles Calvert in 1673. Nathanial Chapman was a close friend of George Mason across the river. Mount Aventine, is an 1840's house with a panoramic view of the Potomac River. Trail visits the Potomac River edge and Chapman family cemetery. Site includes over 3 dozen rare state species of plants and many birds including Bald Eagles. Indian Head (Chapman State Park) is watched over by Piscataway Indians Tayac territory. The second 5-km trail is down Indian Head Highway as described in the trail directions. This loop includes the Potomac-Chesapeake branch railroad, Veterans Memorial, historic church and a wonderful vista of Mattawoman Creek the other side of Cornwallis Neck from Chapman State Park.
