DESCRIPTION: An important strength of the Hirshhorn Museum is its hold
	ings in figurative art. Strange Bodies brings together some of the mos
	t praised and popular examples of figuration from the collection to sh
	ow how expressionistic and surrealistic impulses toward human represen
	tation have evolved from the early and mid-20th century to recent deca
	des. The tension between the enthusiastic response that figuration oft
	en receives from general audiences and the loaded\, at times dark cont
	ent it can carry is also explored. Moreover\, the installation allows 
	an assessment of past collection building. Featured artists include Al
	berto Giacometti\, Jean Dubuffet\, Willem de Kooning\, Francis Bacon\,
	 Balthus\, René Magritte\, Magdalena Abakanowicz\, Georg Baselitz\, Lu
	cian Freud\, Robert Gober\, Julian Schnabel\, Franz West\, Janine Anto
	ni\, Matthew Barney\, John Currin\, Ron Mueck\, and Lisa Yuskavage.Str
