	5-2787.  Rhinoceros belongs to the school of drama known as theater of
	 the absurd\, a designation for plays written by primarily European pl
	aywrights in the late 1940s\, 1950s and 1960s and for the style of the
	ater which evolved from their work.  The UAB Department of Theatre has
	 won the highest honors awarded to university theaters\, including nat
	ional honors and best in region from the Kennedy Center American Colle
	ge Theatre Festival. In 2008\, UAB&39\;s production of In the Blood wa
	s one of three shows chosen by KCACTF from 300 in consideration nation
	wide. It marked the first time in 22 years an Alabama university&39\;s
	 show went to the national theater festival. Faculty members in the de
	partment continue to work professionally in addition to teaching. UAB 
	Theatre performances are presented at the Alys Stephens Center\, UAB&3
	9\;s own world-class performing arts center. Next year the department 
	will celebrate its 40th anniversary. The cast of Rhinoceros is Muhamma
