SUMMARY:Our Expanding Universe and its Future
DESCRIPTION: Location: Barrick Museum Auditorium Prof. Kentaro Nagamin
e\, UNLV Department of Physics and Astronomy Our view of the universe
has gone through an important paradigm shift during the last decade. T
he expansion of the universe was first discovered in 1929 by Edwin Hub
ble. Recent astronomical data suggest that expansion is accelerating d
ue to an unknown and mysterious dark energy\, as it is called\, an ene
rgy or field that makes up almost ¾ of the density of the cosmos. The
new theoretical model predicts that all the galaxies around us will di
sappear into the horizon in approximately 100 billion years\, expandin
g beyond the ability of light to register their presence\, and that we
will be left alone in a truly dark universe.\n Pam Weiss 895-3401 pam
