SUMMARY:The Last Conquistador - ArtCrawl Screenings
DESCRIPTION: Description: Box 13 ArtSpace presents screenings of The
	Last Conquistador\, Saturday\, November 22\, 10am-6pm. Curated by: Cry
stal Benavides. The Last Conquistador\, directed by J. Valdez and Crist
ina Ibarra will be featured at BOX 13 ArtSpace on November 22\, 2008 a
	s a component to 16th Annual Artist's Warehouse ArtCrawl\,. The first
screening will begin at 10:00 a.m. and run continuously in two-hour i
ntervals with the last showing starting at 6:00 p.m. Exhibition space
is an ever-changing traditionally white canvas that can display an arr
	ay of\, but not limited to\, social ideologies\, automatism\, sound\,
objects and contemporary thought. Exhibition spaces overlapped a full
spectrum of mediums and have become an uninhibited exhibition free-fo
r-all. John Valdez and Christina Ibarra's documentary The Last Conqui
stador is a reflective insight into art\, a silent extravaganza of con
flict\, narcissism and social responsibility. When the renowned sculpt
or\, John Houser\, began creating a monument to the Spanish conquistad
or Juan de Oñata for the city of El Paso\, it was supposed to be a lit
tle larger than life size. But he secretly harbored a dream: to build
the largest bronze equestrian statue ever created in human history. C
loistered away in a remote and forgotten corner of Mexico City\, John
and his son Ethan worked endlessly for ten years crafting an exquisite
and foreboding icon. To some\, it is magnificent\, alluring and seduc
tive\, a fitting tribute to the extraordinary contribution Hispanic pe
ople have made to the building of the American west. It is a history
that they felt has often been maligned or ignored by mainstream histor
ians. To others it is a frightful reminder of a time when the sword an
d the cross were used to decimate those who would defy the will of the
Spanish crown. THIS FILM IS FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. The trailer fo
