DESCRIPTION: Announcing the 10th DVD/Movie Party for our Detroit Athe
ists Meetup Group! Chandler (nee Mary) and Jim have invited up to 16 o
f us to their house in Harper Woods for an afternoon of movie viewing
and discussion. Chandie and Jim have a viewing room that accommodates
16 people. Viewing will be done on a 52” screen TV. Join us for this
thought provoking drama! The Movie: The Man From Earth Amazon.com. Bas
ed on renowned sci-fi author Jerome Bixby's final 1998 manuscript\, Ma
n From Earth is the long-awaited film adaptation in which Professor Jo
hn Oldman (David Lee Smith) attempts to convince his fellow faculty me
mbers that he is 14\,000 years old. Shot almost entirely inside Oldman
's cabin as he's about to leave his friends and career\, the film's di
alogue consists of philosophical chatting about the possibility and ra
mifications of his alleged birth during the Upper Paleolithic era. As
his faculty peers are all anthropology\, biology\, religion\, and phil
osophy scholars\, the conversation levels remain high throughout. Oldm
an's friend Harry (John Billingsley) is well versed in multiple religi
ons as well as in science\, while Gruber (Richard Riehle) is invited t
o the house mid-story to evaluate Oldman's psychological state. Edith
(Ellen Crawford) is the Christian voice\, considering the religious re
percussions of Oldman's assertion. All the while\, Oldman's love inter
est\, Sandy (Annika Peterson)\, remains quietly contemplative and most
capable of believing that he doesn't visually age and has seen epochs
and historical eras come and go. Humorous scenes\, such as when his f
riends discover a Van Gogh painting wedged into the back of his pick-u
p truck\, keep the story flowing. Similar to some great episodes of Th
e Twilight Zone\, Man From Earth does pose enough grand questions abou
t life and death that urge viewers to wonder if such a man could plaus
ibly exist\, and if so\, what his fate would be.Trinie Dalton. The Man
From Earth\, despite its speculative and fascinating theme\, offers a
naturalistic explanation for the Christian Crucifixion Myth. By the e
nd\, the film is very devastating to the Christian religion\, and pull
s no punches about all theocracy and its myths. A Hint for plot resolu
tion: Sometimes it’s a good idea to keep old photographs around! A mu
st for Atheists and with a gripping plot\, we hope DAM Members will co
me see this DVD\, have fun and great discussion. If you can’t make it
to this party\, Man From Earth is highly recommended for your private
viewing. This film is a Must See for Atheists Please bring your own b
everages and snacks. Coffee will be provided. Because of limited space
please RSVP on line. We can only accommodate 16 people. These are wel
l-attended events\, so please cancel if you must change your plans Tha
nks to all those considerate members who have canceled their RSVP in t
he past so others could fill the empty space. See you there!\n
