SUMMARY:Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons
DESCRIPTION: Graphic novel time! And not just any graphic novel - the
one that started everything. The book that changed what graphic novel
s were\, and what comic books could be. The Hugo award winning Watchme
n was originally a twelve issue comic book series from the mid 80's th
at was later collected into one book\, and that book hasn't been out o
f print since. And for good reason: It's a complex\, very adult story
that redefined what a superhero is\, treating them as fallible humans
with problematic relationships and the potential corrupting nature of
power. Here's a summary excerpt from Wikipedia: Moore used the story a
s a means to reflect contemporary anxieties and to deconstruct the sup
erhero concept. Watchmen takes place in an alternate history United St
ates where the country is edging closer to a nuclear war with the Sovi
et Union. After government-sponsored superhero The Comedian is found m
urdered\, the vigilante Rorschach warns his former colleagues of what
he believes is a conspiracy to kill costumed heroes. As the story prog
resses\, the protagonists discover that one of the heroes has resolved
to stave off war between the United States and the USSR by carrying o
ut a plan that will kill millions of innocent people. Creatively\, the
focus of Watchmen is on its structure. Gibbons used a nine-panel grid
layout throughout the series and added recurring symbols such as a bl
ood-stained smiley face. All but the last issue feature supplemental f
ictional documents that add to the series' backstory\, and the narrati
ve is intertwined with that of another story\, a fictional pirate comi
c titled Tales of the Black Freighter\, which one of the characters is
reading. Watchmen has received critical acclaim both in the comics an
d mainstream press\, and is regarded as a seminal text of the comic bo
ok medium. After a number of attempts to adapt the series into a featu
re film\, director Zack Snyder's Watchmen is scheduled for release in
March 2009. I've read it several times and look forward to reading it
again. If you've never read it\, here's your excuse to read a comic bo
ok. (Not that you need one\, but some people seem to.) I've been wanti
ng to do a meetup on this for a while (our last graphic novel was Blan
kets by Craig Thompson\, still highly recommended) and now that the hi
gh-profile movie is to be released in March\, I want to make sure we g
et to it before then. And it wont take you more than two hours to read
:) See you on the 8th!\n
