SUMMARY:Using Mapping Technology to Help Protect Endangered Whales
DESCRIPTION: \nThe North Atlantic right whale is one of the most endan
gered large whales in the world\, with fewer than 400 individuals. The
se whales live exclusively off the East Coast and are commonly killed
by collisions with ships and entanglement in fishing gear. Geographer
Kerry Lagueux of the New England Aquarium's research department is emp
loying mapping technology to reduce the risks for these surface feedin
g whales. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is being used to docume
nt seasonal whale movements and recently has resulted in the changing
of shipping lanes in both Canada and the U.S. Beginning in early Decem
ber\, speed limits are being imposed on ships in American waters where
right whales are present. GIS will play a crucial role in monitoring
vessel compliance with the new federal regulations. The presentation w
ill begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, Nov. 20 in the Harborside Learning L
ab located at the New England Aquarium\, Central Wharf\, Boston. Admis
sion is free and registration is required. A reception with light refr
eshments will follow the presentation. For questions\, or to register\
	, contact Vickie Cataldo at (617) 973-0235 or vcataldo@neaq.org. For m
	ore information\, visit www.neaq.org.
