Conceived as a replacement for the RFK Stadium in 1996, the stadium opened its doors in 1997 and was immediately ranked as the largest capacity football stadium in the US. With a then capacity of 91,704; FedExField was the nation's largest until 2010 when the capacity was reduced to 82,000. With five levels and 200 suites, the stadium conveniently fits all Redskins fans. In addition to hosting the Redskins; the venue has hosted some of the world's biggest musicians. The Rolling Stones performed there along there 1997 Bridges To Babylon Tour stop. Metallica, Linkin Park, and Bruce Springstein all performed there during 2003. More recently, Sir Paul McCartney made a stop along his 2009 Summer Live tour.
