Baroness plays an eclectic brand of heavy metal, embracing the ferocity and sharp technique of new-millennium metal but with melodic accents and intelligent guitar work that suggests the influence of sludge and post-punk bands. The four members of Baroness -- John Baizley on guitar and vocals, Pete Adams on guitar, Summer Welch on bass, and Allen Blickle on drums -- are all originally from Lexington, VA, but they pulled up stakes and relocated to Savannah, GA, when they formed the band in mid-2003. Baroness made their recording debut in 2005 with First, a three-song EP released through Savannah-based indie label Hyperrealist Records. A second EP from Baroness, simply called Second, appeared in stores later the same year. In 2006, Baroness teamed up with another offbeat but powerful band from Savannah, Unpersons, for a split EP entitled A Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk released through At a Loss Records. In 2007, Baroness signed with the well-respected independent metal label Relapse Records, and in the fall of 2007 they issued their first full-length disc, The Red Album, followed by extensive touring. They have since also released the Blue Record. Iron Age

Hardcore band from Austin Texas including members of Far From Breaking. In the vein of Leeway, Cro-Mags and other early 90's crossover. They released their first demo tape on vocalist Tarpey's Next Level label and followed with the full-length "Constant Struggle" on Youngblood Records, and the "Butcher's Bill" 7" on Lockin Out Records, all in 2006. 2008 saw the release of the very garagy sounding "Burden Of Empire" 7", self released by the band, the "The Way Is Narrow" tape once again on Next Level and the 7" version on Painkiller Records. The new full length "The Sleeping Eye" goes on sale May 11th, and will be put out by the new label Cyclopean Records first as a 2xLP gatefold record. http://www.myspace.com/ironagetexas http://www.cyclopeanrecords.com/

Dark Castle

Florida's sludge two-piece Dark Castle first appeared in 2008 with an elaborately packaged self-released demo (Flight of the Pegasus) that garned a good deal of favorable attention from the metal press and other bands (including Relapse Records' Minsk). It is easy to see why this unsigned band turned so many heads, as there are several obvious elements that separate them from their peers. In an extreme rarity in metal genres, most of the guitar and vocal work is handled by a woman, Stevie Floyd. Also, the band has the distinction of having no bass player (nor bass in any of their recordings), which is strikingly ballsy in a genre that is so intimately associated with low-frequency amplifier worship.
