The Gasconade River is one of several excellent floating streams on Houston District, and is a favorite of canoeists in the summertime. The gentle currents of the Big Piney River also provides canoeists with relaxing experiences. Roby Lake, located just outside the boundary of Paddy Creek Wilderness, offers a rustic campground with space for your trailer. Equestrians will enjoy memorable rides through the scenic Ozarks by following the trails that head out from either Big Piney Trail Camp or Cole Creek Recreation Area. One of the largest areas of public land north of the Missouri River, and a popular destination for nearby urban dwellers, Cedar Creek offers a variety of recreational experiences while protecting wildlife habitat. Prior to 1937, these lands were privately owned. Fragile soils had been depleted, and erosion had set in. Purchased in the early 1940s by USDA Soil Conservation Service, the lands were transferred to the Forest Service in 1953. With application of sound conservation practices, the lands have recovered. A portion of tallgrass prairie has been restored; effects of erosion have been reversed. Former stripmines, abandoned when coal seams ran out, are now tranquil lakes. Largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish thrive, and the lakes invite hikers and picnickers as well as anglers. 417-967-4194
