Description
Aurora Picture Show and The Menil Collection collaborate this summer to present two free outdoor screenings of Western films on Friday, July 31 and Friday, August 14 in the Menil Park at 1515 Sul Ross. This short summer series will begin on July 31 with a screening of the 1952 film High Noon. On August 14, the series continues with High Ho Silver: A Ride Through TV Westerns, which will showcase short excerpts from some of the best-loved classic television western such as Lone Ranger and others.

High Noon, which has been described as an "existential Western," is an American film starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly that recounts the story of a town marshal who is forced to face a gang of killers by himself. Written as an allegory of the contemporary failure of intellectuals to combat the rise of McCarthyism, as well as how people in Hollywood had remained silent while their peers were blacklisted, High Noon defies the traditional Western archetype.

Take a trip back to the golden era of television westerns for the screening of High Ho Silver: A Ride Through TV Westerns. The evening will offer excerpts from when the genre was at its peak and families gathered around the television for new episodes of "Bonanza," "The Lone Ranger," "The Cisco Kid," "The Roy Rogers Show" and many other six-shooter classics.

Screening of High Noon is scheduled for 8pm, Friday, July 31 outdoors in the Menil Park. High Ho Silver: A Ride Through TV Westerns will be screened at 8pm, Friday, August 14, also in the Menil Park. Both events are free.
