The Sounds I See: Photographs of Musicians

Pablo Casals by Yousuf Karsh. Willie Nelson and Mick Jagger by Mark Seliger. Charlie Parker, Bo Diddley, ZZ Top, Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, Quincy Jones: These are some of the dozens of musicians captured in this exhibition, in over 90 works from Houston collections, most of them selected from the extensive catalogue of photographic works permanently housed at the MFAH.

Sometimes photographers take one artist as their subject-such as Emil Cadoo, in his series of portraits of Edith Piaf- or they focus on a specialized aspect of music, such as Ralph Gibson's portraits of contemporary jazz guitarists. In every case, the aim is to convey the musician's personality, style, and stature as a performer. Some of the photographs in this exhibition are formal portraits either taken in a studio or staged in an environment of the photographer's choosing; many were taken in auditoriums, nightclubs, and symphony halls, conveying the fan's experience.
