Meredith Long & Company presents the exhibition Roy Cullen: Photographs.
Roy Henry Cullen was born in Houston in 1929. His father died in an oil field accident in 1936. His mother reached the age of 97. Roy attended Houston public schools, University of Houston, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has an honorary degree from Southwestern University.
Roy worked for his grandfather, H. R. Cullen, from the age of sixteen until his grandfather's death in 1957. He worked first as a roughneck, then completing wells, and later in the office correlating logs. Upon his grandfather's death he became a member of the executive committee, which ran the family business. The family still works together on business and civic projects.
Roy Cullen is President of RHC Operating Co., President of Cullen Foundation, on the boards of the Boy Scouts of America, Kinkaid School, and Southwestern University. He did research on electro drills and turbo drills in the fifties.
He is the father of six children and the grandfather of eight.
His interest in photography started as a youth while working in a University of Texas photography professor's dark room. The professor taught him the usefulness of how to use the enlarger: cropping, lighting and other tricks. He then set up his own dark room at home. The digital system, (digital cameras, computers, printing, and photo shop programs) put him back in the dark room.
