Hurricane Ike: Is There Wisdom from the Storm?

Jung Center of Houston

July 24-July 25, 2009

The Jung Center of Houston presents Hurricane Ike: Is There Wisdom from the Storm?  The Jung Center community comes together to reflect on the enduring meaning of Hurricane Ike in this special weekend series.

Join us for this special opportunity, almost a year later, to share and explore our stories and reflections on Hurricane Ike. Most of us experienced a complete breakdown of everyday life as we know it - fences fell, roofs blew off, trees toppled, and electricity went out. Confusion and chaos in our world brought us face to face with our humanity and the question of what really matters, individually and as a community. What deeper encounters, what discoveries, what opportunities for soul making did we find there?

Friday night, Houston Playback Theatre will playback stories from Hurricane Ike given to them by the audience. A story, a thought, or even just a feeling shared by an audience member starts a chain reaction of improvisation among the actors of HPT, bringing the story to life. In touching and funny ways, an HPT performance makes the audience members aware of the connections we share but often forget.

On Saturday morning, four Jung Center instructors will each give a short talk about a different psychological aspect of Hurricane Ike: the anticipation of the storm (Diana Heritage), the experience of the storm itself (Kate Burns), the time after the storm (Anne Strain), and the lingering damage to our shelters (Tiffany Baugher). Executive Director Jerry Ruhl will moderate a period of discussion. After a lunch break, participants will have the opportunity to explore their own stories through writing and art in an expressive arts mini workshop led by Michele Lees.
