Renowned philosopher + mathematician speaking at Rice University as part of the President's Lecture Series. Douglas Hofstadter wrote the well-known, "Godel, Escher, Bach" in 1979, an exploration of consciousness + identity. He followed it up in 2007 with "I Am A Strange Loop", which focuses in on the definition of the I or Self. He has a unique perspective on the "Soul" as the I + how it exists + replicates. After studying this phenomenon + "ranking" Souls according to level of development, he became a vegetarian.
