Russian Cultural Center Our Texas

June 10-August 29, 2009

Russian Cultural Center Our Texas invites all art lovers to our Caviart Gallery.  During the summer we present:a new display of four Russian miniature icons painted on papier-mache and selected pieces of laquer miniature jewelry and boxes by artist Lyudmila Babaeva from Kholui.

4 miniature icons painted on papier-mache depict the images of Virgin Mary. Lacquer miniature boxes and jewelry made in tradition of Kholui. Kholui is a Russian village famous in Russia and known throughout the world as a center for the creation of papier-mache lacquer miniatures. The themes for miniature paintings vary from Russian fairy-tales to Russian epics, folklore, and history. Special attention is paid to architectural landscape. All of the lacquer miniature items are hand-painted, and only natural components are used in all stages of production.

Babaeva - a miniaturist - finished the Kholui Art School in 1976 and has been employed by the Kholui lacquer miniature factory since 1977. She is a member of the Artist's Union of Russia. Her work - lovely and delicate - was first exhibited in 1988.

All artwork will be available for purchase.  A portion of the proceeds will go to the Russian Cultural Center "Our Texas," a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation dedicated to providing opportunities for all Houstonians to learn about the arts, history and culture of Russian and the Russian emigre community residing in Texas.

And also continuing on view, Recollection About Havana: Photo Exhibition by Vladimir Frumin  is opened till July 12. Plus Pastels by Yan Antonyshev, an artist from St. Petersburg.
