Learn about Eagles at Mossy Bank Park
Chemung Valley Audubon Society will host Randy Weidner, of Steuben County, on Thursday, October 18, when he presents “Eagles at Mossy Bank Park.” The 7:30 p.m. meeting and program are in the main dining room at Appleridge, 168 Miller St., Horseheads. A bird identification workshop precedes the program at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome to the free events.
Weidner’s presentation highlights the period from 2009 to 2016 when there was an active Bald Eagle nest in the valley below Mossy Bank Park and Nature Center in the Village of Bath. “I like to keep in touch with all the natural happenings in the park,” he said. The 167-acre park includes 100 wooded acres, interpretive nature trails, a pond, a log cabin classroom, and a scenic overlook with views of the Cohocton and Keuka valleys.
According the Department of Environmental Conservation, mistreatment of Bald Eagles in the last century caused them to be nearly eliminated from New York State. Loss of habitat, human disturbance, illegal hunting, and exposure to pesticides such as DDT brought the population down to one breeding pair by 1976. Today, more than 300 pairs nest in the state, thanks to intensive restoration efforts begun in the 1970s. The DEC continues to monitor active nests throughout the state.
Chemung Valley Audubon Society’s monthly programs and field trips are free and open to all. One of 28 Audubon chapters statewide, its purpose is to encourage the study, enjoyment, and protection of birds and other wildlife, and to promote educational programs, lectures, and field trips.
