MOULIN ROUGE

March 20 at 1 p.m., 4 p.m., 7:30 p.m.
A section of From Whistler to Warhol is devoted to prints and drawings in late 19th-century France, and John Huston’s biopic of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (whose May Milton is on view in the exhibition) captures that era’s smoky haze of Montmartre cabarets and Parisian streets in glorious Technicolor. Considered Huston’s most underrated film, Moulin Rouge stands the test of time, with Jose Ferrer deftly playing the artist. Avant-garde French composer George Auric’s score is another highlight (he also did the score for La Belle et La Bête). The meticulous set design and cinematography expertly evoke the mood of Lautrec’s paintings.
