Details: As is the tradition Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park will be closed Thursday, November 26, 2009 for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Did you know that Lincoln is the first president to suggest a Day of Thanksgiving? On May 9, July 7, and September 3, 1864, Lincoln issued proclamations in honor of Union victories. On October 20th, he released his last Proclamation of Thanksgiving. Now therefore, I, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, do hereby appoint and set apart the last Thursday of November next as a day which I desire to be observed by all my fellow citizens wherever they may be, as a day of thanksgiving and praise to Almighty God, the beneficent Creator and Ruler of the universe. After Lincolns tragic death in 1865, the next 14 presidents observed Thanksgiving as stated in Lincolns 1864 proclamation. In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt changed the observance of Thanksgiving to a week earlier by stating it would be observed on the fourth, but not last, Thursday in November. This was an effort to encourage more holiday shopping which would bolster the economy. In 1941, Congress issued a joint resolution returning Thanksgiving to the fourth Thursday in November.
