Description
I have closed this trip to new RSVPs, however, if you would like to come, e-mail me and we'll see what we can work out. This is a big trip, and one you're going to have to start planning for now. We're going to go climb Mt. Washington via the Lion's Head Route in winter. This is a steep snow route, so there won't be any technical climbing, although the use of ice axes and crampons (and possibly snow shoes) will be required. We will meet at the Fairfax County Government Center at (time yet to be determined) on January 23. We will return late on January 25 (I don't have an estimated time of arrival yet). When you enter the Government Center via Forum Dr., use the second entrance into the parking lot on your left and look for my silver Nissan Pathfinder with VA tags "ALPNST". We will carpool to BWI airport where we will catch our flight to Manchester, NH via Southwest Airlines. This trip is open to anyone with winter camping and backpacking experience (although previous mountaineering experience will be very helpful), but understand that this is a significant undertaking, in a wilderness environment, where the weather can be really nasty. You must be physically fit, and mentally ready to meet the challenges. That being said, this will not be a technical climb (no vertical ice climbing), but I will teach basic ice axe and crampon use, as well as self-arrest techniques. We will fly from BWI airport to Manchester, NH via Southwest airlines (only $69 each way if you book 14 days in advance) and stay in a hotel (yet to be determined), then we'll wake up and climb to Huntington Ravine, where we'll camp Saturday night. On Sunday we'll wake up and climb the Lion's Head route to the summit (weather permitting) carrying only day packs. From the summit, we'll decend to our camp, which we will have already broken down that morning, pick-up our camping gear and descend to the cars. After a good meal, having recapped the climb, and making sure we are all embellishing the story appropriately, we'll start the the drive to the airport. We'll board our plane, fly home, and drive back to Fairfax. You will be able to rent mountain boots, crampons, and ice axes at the EMS store in North Conway if you don't already own this equipment. The decision to use snow shoes will be made at a later date, as it depends on snow conditions, but you can rent these as well. The fee for this trip includes food for while we're on the mountain, hotel, car rental, and miscellaneous logistics. You will be required to book a specific flight with Southwest Airlines so we are departing/arriving togethe (this information will be shared later). Rental of equipment is not included either. Keep your eyes peeled for more details. I will post a gear/clothing list (pay very close attention to required equipment) as well as information about booking your flight. Due to the fact that we're flying, the RSVP deadline is going to be January 9. If you decide to attend after the 9th, e-mail me and we can discuss it (you'll have to pay more for the flight and run the risk of it being full). If you RSVP for this trip, please be serious. Because we're flying, a rental car will be involved, as well as hotel reservations, it's not as easy to change our plans so serious RSVPs are necessary. There is a Gear List Posted under the "Files" tab. Please review this before you overwhelm me with questions about what you should/shouldn't bring. After reviewing it, if you still have questions, which I'm sure you will, please e-mail me with your questions.
