Description
Daily, dawn to dusk. YR 1972 is rated 1+ but is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. Historic Area gate is locked at 4 p.m. in the winter and 6 p.m. in the summer. Plan to start walk early enough to complete it by closing. Paved and natural state park trails through historic Fort Stevens State Park, which is now a part of the Lewis & Clark National Historic Park. Fort Stevens was the primary military defense installation in the three-fort Harbor Defense System at the mouth of the Columbia River (Forts Canby and Columbia in Washington were the other two). The fort served for 84 years, beginning with the Civil War and closing at the end of World War II. A number of historic military bunkers and gun batteries can be explored along the route. Take time to browse through displays dating back to the Civil War at the military museum. Route passes a replica of a Clatsop Indian cedar longhouse. Beautiful views of the Columbia River and natural forested areas await you.
