Learn Foucault Learn to Code Meetup at Postal code 12834, United States

We meet twice a week A) we go over coding projects one day This is the process of trying to figure out why we have bugs, what makes for a good algorithm, how a language works for newbies. And be friendly and supportive to all. B) The other day we go through a book about media as we deal with it today. Possibilities include Code 2.0 By Lawrence Lessig, Understanding Media by Marshall Mcluhan, Discipline and Punish (or one of his works on Biopower) by Michael Foucault, and we shall see what others suggest or is suggested to us, the Design of Everyday Things by Donald Norman, Aristotle's the Politics, etc. The group is designed around the fact that yes, group members should ask around (even write back to favorite university professors, or even to authors of the books, if they are alive), to gain more ideas. The idea is thus- we create, we engage in critique, we become disruptive, and we become better at what we do by being balanced creatures. we therefore, when learning to code (or continuing our practice), should be learning about it as a philosophical and artistic discipline. As a result, this is a group committed to seeing everyone grow in a variety of ways. Hence why we are open to each other as peer mentors. We don't all start out in the same places for any of these topics, or any question. Some are going to be new at coding, some are going to be new at reading Aristotle for the purpose of analyzing media. As a result, the only requirements to join are curiosity and to support each others' curiosity, despite the frustrations this may entail. One of the possibilities that can come from peer mentorship are long term group projects and split-offs. If some (or all) members find some theoretical idea from a book or a coding issue interesting- we want them to pursue it together. This group is as much a testing group of what it means to combine theory and practice together. Let's read and code!
