NOTICE TO NEW MEMBERS: I request that new members attend a book discussion before signing up for additional activities, such as Movie Night. You will be very welcome to join in the "fun" events once we get to know you. In preparation for our 2/13 book discussion of An Ideal Husband, we'll gather to watch a film adaptation (described below). It would be helpful if a few would bring along a snack to share with the group. I'll collect the $2 monthly membership fee from anyone not coming to the book discussion. For those of you who sign-up, I'll e-mail directions a few days before the film. The play has been adapted into several feature films: 1. (1947) An Ideal Husband . The film stars Paulette Goddard, Michael Wilding, Diana Wynyard, Hugh Williams, C. Aubrey Smith, Glynis Johns and Constance Collier. It was produced and directed by Alexander Korda from a screenplay by Lajos Biró; with costume design by the incomparable Cecil Beaton [who also costumed the eye candy that is My Fair Lady]. Unfortunately, this is not available on DVD. 2. (1969) An Ideal Husband , starring Jeremy Brett and Margaret Leighton. I am really looking forward to this, even though reviews have said it was filmed in that flat teleplay format. I will get this from Netflix. 3. (1998) An Ideal Husband, starring James Wilby and Jonathan Firth (Colin's younger brother). This is a modernized version which was such a bomb that no one remembers it today. 4. (1999) An Ideal Husband , starring Jeremy Northam, Rupert Everett, Julianne Moore, Minnie Driver and Cate Blanchett. It was directed by Oliver Parker and was selected as the 1999 Cannes Film Festival's closing film. I've seen this version, and it is well-done. I will get this from Netflix.
