Mental Health Awareness Highlights May as Mental Health Month
      May 20, 2017
      10 am to 2 pm
      Mental Health Awareness Day
      Redeemer Lutheran Church
Statistics show the truth of the problem of mental health in this country. One in five Americans will be diagnosed with a mental health condition in their lifetime. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States in 2014. In that same year, as reported by the Center of Disease Control there were 47,055 deaths in the United States from drug overdose. Contrast this with the number of deaths from breast cancer at 41,234 in 2013 and you can see the problem.
On May 20, 2017 from 10 am to 2 pm, Redeemer Lutheran Church is the host for a free event to bring awareness to the community about mental health. The community needs to talk about mental health and illness because taking care of your mental health is an important as taking care of your physical health. In remembrance of those we have lost to suicide, a chapel service will also be held at 2:30 pm.
Janet Memoli RN, BSN and a member of the American Psychiatric Nurse’s Association is the chairperson for the event.
There will be three main themes at the event to focus on the mental health issues of Anxiety, Depression and Substance Abuse. There will be professionals in each room to answer questions about these issues. There will be a small raffle and exhibitors in each room for participants to talk to. Gift bags will be given to the first 50 people and a large raffle for those who go to all three rooms will be drawn at 2 pm. The large raffle will include $200 of Disney cards, gift certificate for computer consulting and a perfume basket with a $25 Visa gift card. Exhibitors include David Lawrence Center, Lee Health, Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, CARES , Children’s Home Society, Royal Palm Christian Counseling and David Kneeland, a Social Security disability consultant. There will also be a bounce house and other children’s activities. Food donations will be collected to distribute to local food pantries.
If you wish to exhibit at this event or donate please contact Janet Memoli at 239-994-3650 or see the website at www.mental healthsaturday.com.
