Description
OKALOACOOCHEE SLOUGH STATE FOREST (112 miles west of Central Broward) This forest encompasses nearly 35,000 acres in Collier and Hendry counties. It is located on CR-832, east of SR-29 between Immokalee and LaBelle. The slough extends northward to the Caloosahatchee River and southward about 50 miles into Big Cypress Swamp. The Wildlife Management Area with its diverse natural communities of slough, marsh, cypress, wet prairie, pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, and oak-palm hammocks, provides important habitat for the endangered Florida panther and the crested caracara. Deer, hog, turkey and small game are all found in this WMA. There are 39 miles of trails open for wildlife viewing, hiking, non-motorized biking, and horseback riding. http://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/f/b/c/highres_3109085.jpeg D I R E C T I O N S . Turn right and take US-29 north for about 33 miles until you get to CR-832. Turn right and take CR-832 east for about 9 miles until you reach the Ranger Check Station at Wildcow Grade on the right hand side of the road. Note: You will pass several trail entrances on both sides of the road before you get to the Ranger Check Station. The campground is 2.5 miles south of CR-832 on Wildcow Grade. http://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/7/c/8/a/event_3091882.jpeg Each campsite has its own picnic table and fire ring. http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/f/b/e/highres_3109086.jpeg http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/7/e/4/2/event_3092322.jpeg There is a large pond next to the campsites. $ $ $ $ $ EVENT FEES $ $ $ $ $ $2.00 per person per day for the Day Use Fee of the park. $7.00 per site per night for camping. IMPORTANT NOTE:All campsites are primitive, no water or electric on site. Also all campsites are first-come first-served and are non-reservable. The fees are payable in cash only and you must have exact change because they go into an unmanned pay station at the campsite. The way the pay station works is each person deposits their money into a numbered envelope and then rips off the matching numbered receipt before depositing it into a locked box. Each person will then have their own receipt in the event that a Forest Ranger does happen to come by and check on us. So come on out and join us if you WANNA CAR CAMP!If you need any additional information about this event: E-mail Phil Kelley or call him at (954) 987-7757
