      ACT. Shorts in the Museum

In his manifesto The Birth of the Sixth Art, published in 1911, Italian film theoretician Ricciotto Canudo argued that cinema was a new art, “a superb conciliation of the Rhythms of Space (the Plastic Arts) and the Rhythms of Time (Music and Poetry),” a synthesis of the five ancient arts: architecture, sculpture, painting, music, and poetry (cf. Hegel’s Lectures on Aesthetics). Canudo later added dance as a sixth precursor, a third rhythmic art with music and poetry, making cinema the seventh art.

These are the premises for the first screening of ACT. Shorts in the Museum: the very first event of what we know will become a successful series. The Gregory Allicar Museum of Art, in collaboration with ACT Year-Round, presents two short movies that make space for voices often found in the margins. Taking inspiration from the figures and stories found in the exhibition To Survive on this Shore, this year’s short series celebrates diversity and different perceptions, highlighting human rights films that share untold stories and give a voice to marginalized people.
