What is MIST?

MIST is a series of competitions for high school students, ranging from tajweed to oratory to fashion design, held over a weekend.  We are dedicated towards empowering high school students to be active and integral members of their community.  MIST benefits not just the participating students, but society at large.  Click here to learn more.

MIST is a national organization, with almost a dozen chapters across the US and Canada.  MIST Detroit was founded five years ago, and has been held at Wayne State University for the past three.What is the MIST Detroit Banquet?

The Banquet is the community’s opportunity to learn about MIST and see its impact.  The majority of the program will consist of MIST competitors demonstrating their talents and skills – from tajweed to oratory to spoken word.  MIST also hopes to raise funds to offset the cost of our annual tournament and lower admission fees for participants.Why should I support MIST?

MIST gives high school students a venue to excel in the arts, sciences, and humanities – in an Islamic environment.  We are molding the next generation of community leaders by bringing them together under one roof to foster creativity, promote communication, and motivate leadership.  There is no other organization like MIST in Michigan, and we need your support to grow and positively impact more youth.

In addition, while MIST charges competitors only $35 to attend, the actual costs for the Tournament reach $45-50.  This gap in funding must come from supporters like you.How can I help?

Community Members:  Attend our Banquet and invite family and friends!  If you can’t attend, you can still donate online.

Business Owners/Non-profit Executives:  Consider sponsoring MIST – we have a number of Sponsorship Packages which will give a return on your investment.  You can sign up for any of them before the Banquet by emailing us at detroit@getmistified.com.  You may also sign up for a Package at the Banquet itself.

MIST Competitors/Ambassadors:  Make sure you and your family attends the Banquet!  If you’re interested in performing or bringing one of your MIST competition submissions to the Banquet, email us at detroit@getmistified.com.What will MIST do with my money?

All money raised at the Banquet will go directly to MIST Detroit, a 501(c)(3) organization (IRS EIN 27-1471933).  Donations and Sponsorships will go towards:

1.  Financial aid for those in need.  We aim to double our Financial Aid Fund, helping 30 or more competitors attend MIST.

2.  Lower admission fees for students.  Admission fees for MIST 2012 were $35, a 40% increase over the past 3 years.  Lowering admission fees would reduce the amount of Financial Aid needed, and encourage more students to attend.

3.  Better prizes for winning competitors.  Currently, we only offer prizes offered by sponsors (such as a free ACT prep course from Kaplan).  With your help, we can establish a MIST College Fund, offering cash scholarships for higher education to our top participants.

4.  Tournament equipment.  MIST Detroit operates with barely enough materials every year – we do not have enough buzzer systems for Quiz Bowl, jerseys for Basketball, and even medals for our Awards Ceremony.  A capital influx will ensure we have ample supplies for the next three to four years.I still have questions – who should I contact?
