Walking Event: at Farmington Inn

Hours: Daily, dawn to dusk. Incorporated in 1645, Farmington is one of the most attractive towns in Connecticut. Following the 1839 Amistad revolt and the 1841 trial giving the slaves their freedom by the U.S. Supreme Court, all 32 surviving men and four children were brought to Farmington by three abolitionists who sponsored them. For eight months (March - November 1841), the Amistad survivors lived, worshiped, and were schooled in the village before their return to Africa. In addition to Amistad historic sites and many fine examples of 17th and 18th century architecture, the trail includes Miss Porter’s preparatory school, the Hill-Stead Museum, the 17th century Stanley-Whitman Museum (with educational exhibits of early colonial life), and a 17th century gristmill along the Farmington River. The Hill-Stead houses a famous collection of impressionist paintings; the museum was once the home of Theodate Pope, one of America’s first female architects and survivor of the Lusitania sinking.
