Event details: Vintage Voyage Gisborne
Description
This is a chance for Tairawhiti, the hidden jewel otherwise known as Gisborne, to showcase the beauty, uniqueness, culture, scenery and wonderful people of this area.
WA165 is Gisborne's locally restored WA class steam train. It is the last steam train of its type left in NZ. It was lovingly restored to its former glory over a 14 year period, to be rolled out of the shed in October 2000. She will be running over the weekend, taking our visitors on excursions around Poverty Bay.
WA165 will cross the main runway of Gisborne's airport on its travels, a photo opportunity that will happen once in a lifetime.
You can disembark at Gisborne's history-rich Darton Field where there will be vintage aircraft here from all over New Zealand with the Tiger Moth Club of New Zealand holding their annual national gathering & competitions.
Wander through the Gisborne Aviation Museum and see the strong aviation history of aviation in this area, from East Coast Air Services, RNZAF No8 GR & 30 & 31 Grumman Avenger SQN to the pioneering days of topdressing.
See the static exhibits of Lockheed L18 Lodestar ZK-BUV, NZ2505 Grumman Avenger, Douglas DC3 ZK-BYF and flying exhibit De Havilland DH82 Tiger Moth ZK-BAL.
All these aircraft are over 66 years old and have served their time in Gisborne.
You can also disembark at the port where you can see Gisborne and Poverty Bay from a different perspective aboard the beautifully restored 1921 MV Takitimu.
Enjoy a showcase of East Coast Talent or sample Gisborne's finest cheeses and wines, then watch the sunset over the Wharerata Ranges casting its hue over the sea as we say goodbye to another day in paradise.
All proceeds from this event will be distributed to the Gisborne Aviation Preservation Society, Gisborne City Vintage Railway and the MV Takitimu Trust to carry on the great work they have started.
