      MY TALK

      Phoneography:

Mobile short-form videos inspire a procrastinating, wannabe, camera phone filmmaker

The ability to shoot, edit, produce, and upload video, entirely and exclusively with a smart phone, is a total game-changer for journalists, video bloggers, business owners, filmmakers, and activists alike. As essential as video has become for the web, it is transforming social media as well, infusing it with the power to become more real-time and personal than ever.

Join me as we take a look at the most popular creative apps and services, as well as some of the more innovative results that can ultimately be used in Internet marketing, education, storytelling ... we're limited only by what we can imagine.

@mouselink is the internet handle of the New-York-based author, teacher, public speaker and artist, Matteo Wyllyamz. Matteo is a "Creative," interested in new media, visual communication, technorealism, and futurism. He writes and speaks about the ways in which emerging technologies impact our society, communities, businesses, schools, and us as individuals.

Matteo creates visual and spoken-word presentations on these topics, not only for technological enthusiasts, but also for those who may not already be paying attention. He likes to tell stories. Many of them are global. All are personal.

Matteo describes himself as a "Beatnik super-human, disguised as geek, loitering at the intersection of Art and Science."

      ---- --
For many years I wanted to experiment with shooting and editing video, but there was always something that kept me from getting into it. Maybe it's just plain laziness, but I never found myself investing lots of equipment, or learning all the cool editing software. I was always secretly envious of my friends who were posting polished-looking (and oftentimes not-so-polished) videos to their YouTube channels.

Whenever those magical moments would come (eg: my kid's birthday, blowing out the candles), and I was duty-bound to get out the video camera and film, I never really wanted to. I resisted the potential frustration of dealing with technology when I was already having a good time. I didn't want to miss the moment I was immersed in, in the name of recording it for posterity. Also, I never felt like carrying a camera bag around.

Maybe my justifications weren't very good, but they were enough to keep me from ever doing anything with this interest I had.

Of course, now that it's all so easy, there are no more excuses. I've always got my camera phone with me, and when inspiration strikes, I can shoot a brief video, and just stick it in my pocket -- media stored instantly/easily for later editing -- without even thinking about it.

And so I ended up really getting into this concept that we can make videos entirely/exclusively with a smart phone. No computer needed. Shoot, edit, overlay titles and/or captions, produce effects, and even upload the finished product, all without ever having to touch a cable, dongle, or even look for a USB port. Edit video with your feet up, and have it posted before the enjoyment ever feels like it's becoming a duty.

I enjoy sharing this passion with people. Not only is phoneography great fun, but the abilities with which it provides us to share our stories, is nothing short of transformational.
