Tere O'Connor's "Rammed Earth"
Tere O’Connor Dance will perform O’Connor’s most recent work Rammed Earth. An evening-length work, Rammed Earth explores architecture as a fundamental, subliminal force in the choreographic form as well as in the human experience. O’Connor’s interest in ‘sentient architecture’, in which structures change form in response to temperature, climate or human interactivity, is a catalyst for this work. Looking to concepts of contemporary architecture as a source, one of Rammed Earth’s central metaphors is “raising the dance up from the moment you are in.”
The work unfolds on an imaginative, choreographic trajectory driven by architecturally associative references, creating a tumultuous 'liquid' space in constant evolution. Rammed Earth can be seen as an abstract form of documentation, reflecting on and illuminating the interior structures of living. The idea of bridging the rational and unconscious mind is key in all of O’Connor’s work, in which shifting perceptions create a web of personal and historical impulses. Audience members are escorted into different viewing positions throughout the performance.
Rammed Earth is performed by O’Connor’s company of four versatile dancers: Hilary Clark, Heather Olson, Matthew Rogers and Christopher Williams. Rammed Earth includes lighting design by O’Connor’s longtime artistic partners Michael O’Connor and Brian MacDevitt, and an original sound score by composer James Baker.
