Bartók’s fairytale ballet (1917) is about a prince who woos a princess by carving her a wooden toy. Unfortunately, she falls for the puppet… Liszt originally called his Second Piano Concerto ‘Concerto symphonique’, as it develops several themes from a single melodic source. When Dvorák came to New York in 1891, he encouraged his new students to take pride in their nation’s music. His own celebrated, emotional ‘New World’ symphony triumphantly shows the way.
